We are trying to see if Coke can take off the rust of a nail
Research
Acid a sour solution that has too many h ions. A bace is a solution that has too many OH ions. A molecule is the smallest part of a compound that has two or more atoms. A pH is the amount of protons in a solution. A chemicial reaction is when molecules change shape or move.
Acid is a substance with a sour taste. The Base is the bottom support of anything Molecule or any very small particle. pH is a term used to express the acidity of a solution on a scale of 0-14. Iron is Something hard, strong, and rigid. Galvanized is iron or steel, expecially in sheets, coated with zinc to prevent rust. Why does the soda company add acid to the soda? They do it to give it a little zing or to make it fizzy. What percent of phosphoric acid is in pop? over 50 percent is phosphoric acid. Does it matter what kind of nail you use? Yes, if you use a galvanized nail it wouldnt rust and if there is no rust you cant take off the rust. What is the difference between a galvanized nail and a normal nail? Galvanized nails have a coat of zinc over them. What is rust? Rust is ferric hydroxide and ferric oxide, also known as iron oxide
A Chemical reaction is the transformation from one chemical to another. a Reactant is a substance used to create a chemical reaction. the Product is formed during a chemical reaction as reagants are consumed. Phosphoric acid's science is H3Po4. What acid will disolve a nail? carbonic acid will disolve a nail. What chemical reation takes place when you put a rusty nail in cabonic acid? FeO2 + H3CO2 is the Chemical reaction that takes place.
Small Scale TEST
Question: Can 500 ml of club soda clean all of tthe rust off of a nail?
hypothesis: If we put a rusty nail in 500 ml of carbonated water then it will clean all of the rust off of tthe nail because the carbonic acid will react to the rust and clean it off
Variables: IV: club soda ID: Nails Control: Water Constant: Amount of carbonated water, and the size of the nails.
Materials:
3 rusty nails
1000 ml of club soda
3 beakers
500ml of water
Procedure:
get materials out
fill 2 of the beakers with 500 ml of club soda
fill one beaker with 500 ml of water
drop one nail in each beaker
wait over the weekend to see if the of the nail
Small Scale CONCLUSION:
CLAIM:
Carbonated water will clean all of the rust off of a nail. EVIDENCE:
We left a rusty nail in carbonated water or carbonic acid for 4 days and almost all of the rust was cleaned off of the nail. EXPLAINATION:
When the rusty nail was dropped into the carbonic acid the iron oxide in the rust on the nail caused a chemical reaction cleaning all the rust off oof the nail and turning the water orange. THE CHEMICAL REACTION: FeO2+H3CO2 >>>>>>>>>>> Fe0+CO2+H2O
LARGE SCALE TEST:
Question:
Will 500 ml of Coca Cola cclaean all of the rust off of a nail? Materials
1,000 ml Coca Cola
3 rusty nails
3 beakers
500 ml of water
Variables:
IV: Coca Cola
DV: Nails
CONTROL: Water
CONSTANT: Length, width, and size of nails. How long the nails are in the Coke and Water.
Hypothesis:
If we drop a rusty nail into 500 ml of Coca Cola for 4 days then all of the rust will get cleaned off, because te iron oxide in the rust will cause a chemical reaction with the carbonic acid in the Coca Cola which will clean all of the rust off of the nail.
CHEMICAL REACTION: FeO2+H3CO2 >>>>>>>>>>> Fe0+CO2+H2O
PROCEDURE:
Get materials
Put one nail in each beaker
Fill 2 beakers with 500 ml of Coca Cola each
Fill 1 beaker with 500 ml of water
Wait 4 days
record data and whether rust was cleaned off of the nail
Make Conclusion
Large scale conclusion
Claim: 500 ml ofbcoca cola will clean all of the rust off of a rusty nail and will make the nail lighter
Evidence: we filled two beakers wih500ml o f coca cola eachand put one nail in each beaker. Hn took he nails ot 3 days later all of the rust was cleaned off and the nail was lighter.
Explaination: when the rusty nail was dropped into the coca cola the iron oxidein the carbonic acid caused a chemcal reaction that cleaned all of the rust off Of the nailand made iti lighter. This is the chemical reaction
Fe02+h3c02>>>>> feo+co2+h20
Myth is : PLAUSIBLE
This experiment is plausible because when we took the nail out of the coca cola it was not totally clean, there was still a little bit of rust on it. But if you rubed it then all of the rust would come off and the nail looked as good as new.
